Less maintenance is good.

Eliminating drive loss and belt maintenance is also good.

VFDs are now inexpensive, so let’s put everything on a drive, and that’s good. Three goods in a row.

Now, what if that motor fails? Eventually it will. Maybe it’s right away, and under warranty, and maybe its 20 years down the line.

Replacing the motor off the fan on the left? It’s relatively easy, depending on the size and access, but you can see how it’s done.

The fan on the right? Woof. Remember, the motor shaft holds that wheel in place. For starters, the fan is coming out of the ductwork. Then, some surgery. And the fan will require a field balance.

Knowing all that…

Who gets to decide which fan to use?

You do.

Who gets stuck with the problem, should there be one?

All of us.

I’m not talking anyone out of anything. Direct drive is a terrific option. How terrific depends on a lot of different things. Things you might want to know.
