Do you mind being treated like a beginner?

by

This is my favorite way to start teaching a subject.

Is it OK for me to treat you like a beginner?

Usually, a sense of relief is felt when the manager or the oldest engineer in the room (sometime begrudgingly) agrees that would be the best way to begin.

When I started offering classes and then doing some of my own, my first instinct is that the attendees already know the subject, they are going to be bored, and therefore think I am boring and wasting their time.

It’s rarely true.

You’re wrestling with an avalanche of information, a busy day job, and hopefully a life at home.

You end up with a lot of shortcuts. “When I see this, I do that.”

What if your shortcut isn’t a good one?

Perhaps the manufacturer you’ve used for the last 15 years really sucks now.

Perhaps the old way of doing it works, but it could be better.

Maybe your spreadsheet isn’t as magical now as when you built it in 2005.

Maybe “That will never work” could be replaced with “I never thought about it that way.”

In 2023, with 16 new classes, there are going to be hundreds of opportunities to say to yourself, “huh, now that’s kinda cool.”

All those opportunities are a few clicks away. Let’s learn together.
