VAV box selections, why not get it right the first time?

by

A short conversation between an engineer and rep (Tom)

Tom: How do you make your terminal box selections? Spreadsheet or software program?

Engineer: Excel. For weird boxes we might pull up the program to check one or two.

Tom: When it comes to VAV box selections, which issue is the worst:

  1. Getting IT to approve and install new software?
  2. Picking the boxes?
  3. Reviewing submittals and resubmittals?

Engineer: Number 3 is the worst, by far; reviewing submittals and resubmittals. The reps don’t get the selections right, and we can’t pick the boxes for them.

Tom: Good to know

We (maybe we) should all know why. Selections from engineering spreadsheets have formula-based data, not lab data.

On the other hand, it’s true that terminal box selections go WAY faster in spreadsheets. Same is true for fan coils. We just pick fewer fan coils than VAV boxes.

A Remedy

This engineer toolkit by Price will allow you to modify your existing (or build a new) excel-based terminal box selection tool and populate your tables with REAL DATA.

Why not get the best of both worlds

  • Auto select.
  • Multiple selections for each terminal based on size, coil rows, and fins per inch
  • Solution options. Solve for any of the following (just one):
    • Leaving water temperature
    • MBh
    • Air pressure drop
    • Leaving air temperature
  • Filter and sort by any variable

If this sounds good to you, get in touch with me or Dave Madsen, and we’ll set up training for your firm. We’ll work together and update that spreadsheet!

Or keep doing it the old way. We’ll still take care of it, but why not get it right the first time?

Until next time.
