Hi gang, Over the past few months, Air Flow showcased the importance of thermal breaks through our own webinar, an acoustic and thermal panel road show, and the GBES webinar about thermal bridge prevention in building design. Uncontrolled heat loss through bridging is expensive and often unaccounted for in design. The biggest pieces for HVAC? Outside air plenums and control dampers. On control dampers, lets make sure you are detailing and installing your thermal break dampers properly. |

USE THERMALLY BROKEN FRAMES AND BLADES
If the desire is for a thermal break, then do it right and break both the frames and the blades.
USE FLANGED CONSTRUCTION
If your rep sells the contractor a thermal break frame damper and the contractor sleeves the assembly, you may as well have just purchased a low leak damper.

PUT A DETAIL ON YOUR PLANS, SEE BELOW At least for Ruskin, there is a single manual for all control dampers. If your plan doesn’t have a detail specific to thermal break dampers, then the contractor may put it in ‘wrong’. (Use Figure 5, not Figure 4!) |

Thermal break dampers, when installed as intended, can stop the uncontrolled heat loss and improve energy efficiency.
Don’t short-circuit your well-designed thermally broken system with a poorly coordinated installation!
